For two decades Barry Steele has created the lighting, video, and scenic designs for opera, dance, and music productions in the United States, Europe, and Asia.  Important engagements include San Francisco Opera Center, Lucinda Childs Dance Company, Portland Opera, Ballet Stars of Moscow, Nantes Opera, and Nai-Ni Chen Dance Company. New operas such as The Dreamers, Surrender Road, Feynman, Buoso's Ghost, Casanova as well as rarely performed operas such as The Fall of the House of Usher, The Lighthouse, and La Voix Humaine complement his considerable list of standard opera repertory. Les Contes d’Hoffmann, La Bohême, Ariadne auf Naxos, Der Fliegende Hollander, and La Traviata are included in the over one hundred productions he has lit as Resident Lighting Designer for Sarasota Opera, Des Moines Metro Opera, and New Jersey Opera. Additionally his video projected environments are in demand for new opera productions from Lost Highway to Der Zauberflote with many more in development. Since 1989, Mr. Steele has created lighting for dance in Contemporary, Modern, Classical, and Folkloric styles for a diverse range of dance groups including PearsonWidrig DanceTheater, Anna Sokolow’s Players’ Project, Paco Peña’s Flamenco Theater. He currently acts as Production Designer for Battery Dance Company, supervising all productions domestic and foreign. Music ensembles Mr. Steele has illuminated include the Bang on a Can All Stars, Queen Esther Marrow and the Harlem Gospel Singers, So Percussion, Alarm Will Sound, the pop noir group Melomane. As an educator, Barry Steele has supported Battery Dance Company’s arts education residencies in the U.S. and overseas as a teacher, mentor and technical advisor for over a decade and is a repeated guest designer at Indiana University’s Jacobs School of Music.
